In 1976 I joined CCI Life Systems, which later became Redy™ Laboratories and finally Organon Teknika. I had the good fortune of participating in the birth of a new, portable, peritoneal kidney dialysis machine: the Redy Pericycle™. I designed and built all of the electronic and electromechanical systems for this machine -- even the circuit boards, which I etched at home, in my garage.

The Pericycle™ was compact. Its base was not much larger than a full-sized typewriter. During the initial trials at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Westwood I had the rare pleasure of meeting our volunteer patient, a veteran soldier who did not care how much he hurt, as long as he was allowed to own the first commercial unit, so that he could at last be free of the hospital and be able to travel to Baja California. He was going to dialyze on the road!
